The empirical study presented in this paper is about the rendering of linguistic politeness in the institutional translation of the European Union (EU). The analysis examines specifically one aspect of politeness – (im)personalization –in a bilingual corpus of EU texts (i.e. English originals and Italian translations). Its underlying goal is to highlight a further dimension – pragmatic – in the EU’s challenge of preserving institutional multilingualism while speaking with a single voice. Due to the sociocultural grounding of politeness, the way polite discourse is rendered can ultimately shed light on the impact of EU translation policy and practice over the sociolinguistic ecosystem of the EU and over the cultural and identity perceptions of Europeans.
